Screen-lickin’ good - Draw a Candy Cane in Photoshop
Grab the Polygonal Lasso Tool.

With the red layer selected, use the lasso tool to create stripes where you want the white part of the candy cane to show through. Hit delete to get rid of the overlaying red.

Continue around the cane, making sure to adjust your rectangles to triangles around the curved upper portion.

Once you’re done making the stripes, the cane should look something like this.

Let’s add a drop layer to the cane. Select the white J and go into Blending Options. Add a drop shadow and use the following settings:

Now we’re going to add a subtle shadow over the cane to make it pop a little - if you wanted your candy cane to look cartoony, you can stop at this point.
Duplicate the bottom J once again, and delete the newly added dropshadow.

Drag it above the red J.

Enter Blending Options. We want to make the Fill Opacity completely transparent, so set it to 0.

Now select Inner Glow. Change the blend mode to Normal and the Opacity to 15%. Set the size to something around 24.

You will need to adjust the gradient as well. Click the box containing the gradient and make something similar to this. The top box controls the Opacity (so you’ll want that set to 0% on both the left and right sides) and the bottom controls the actual colour. Make that black.

And there you have it! A delectable candy cane!

If you want to dress up your buddy for the special day, head on over to the next page to add in some berries.
