An Eye for an Eye

Just in time for Halloween, learn how to make this cartoonish eyeball in Photoshop. Get creative with the iris and pupils to make something monstrous!

This eyeball was actually inspired by a ring I bought at the Buskers this summer.

So pop open Photoshop and head on past the break!

Alright, let’s cornea this up - grab the Ellipse Tool.

On your canvas, drag out a perfect circle while holding Shift. Don’t worry too much about the sickly green colour, we’ll change that with blending options.

Time to lengthen this eyeball out - select the Direct Selection Tool.

This might get a little tricky. You want to select the point on the left side of the circle, so drag a box around it…

If your point is filled in (with the other points still unfilled!) that means you’re doing great so far:

Now holding down Shift (to keep it on the same plane), grab this point and drag it out as far as you want to the left.

See those two vertical things extending from your point? Those are handles. Grab the top one and bring it down near the point.

Do the same with the bottom, and you now have half an eyeball!

Repeat the same steps for the other side of the eye.

Now to work on the top. Again drag a box around the top point.

This time the handles are horizontal. Drag them outwards to add a bit more fat to the eye.

Repeat for the other side and for the bottom.

Time to remove the green. Open up the Blending Options for this layer. I would actually encourage you to experiment with this part - I was trying to simulate the metal lines that were around my original ring, but perhaps you want it to look different. Here what you would do if you want the metal. Apply these Bevel and Emboss Settings:

Add a subtle radiant gradient overlay (mine goes from a light gray to a white).

And the ‘metallic’ stroke:

Clicking OK, you should now have something similar to this on your canvas:

You know the drill, head on over to the next page to learn how to add in a iris
